Services Provided by Trumpeter Swan Conservation Ontario
The trumpeter swan program continues. After two severe winters the 2015/2016 winter was very mild and winter broke Early. Burlington Bay was not frozen for more than a week and open water was easily found. We had fewer birds overwinter at LaSalle Park and the banding numbers were considerably lower than previous years, but the flock left for their breeding areas healthy, which should produce good cygnet numbers for 2017. Our participation with Canadian Wildlife Services in the Global Swan Inventory was completed and it was determined that we have 2,000 trumpeter swans in the Province of Ontario, but 1,000 are in the Kenora area and migrate south to the United States. The dispute concerning the expansion of Burlington's LaSalle Park marina is ongoing but there have been some positive developments and we are currently optimistic about the income.
