Quadra Island Salmon Enhancement has been an active group on this island for about 35 years. It all began in the late 1970s when people living here rallied around the issue of declining fish populations in local waters. Environmental awareness had been growing throughout the province and across the country over the past decade. People were looking at the environment differently, wanting to understand more about interrelationships between species and their habitats, and the impacts of human activity on natural systems. Provincial and federal grants were becoming readily available for environmental stewardship programs. Into this intellectual and political climate, factor the spirit of curiosity and sense of environmental responsibility of certain Quadra Islanders and QISES came into being. Intent on mediating some pressing habit concerns, the group took a 'natural engineering' approach to salmon streams, and developed a hatchery program under the direction of DFO (Department of Fisheries and Oceans). Three and some decades have brought many changes and new learning to the group's activities, but QISES is still going strong and is one of the most productive volunteer-based groups on the Island today. In recent years we've added public education to our mandate, revisioning the hatchery building as the Salmon EcoCentre.
