In September 2015, the founder and guiding light of Spirit's Mission passed away. To honour her memory, Spirit's Mission has partnered with the Nanaimo-Ladysmith Schools Foundation to create the Gail's Spirit Award. This award will be given to a secondary school graduate from the Nanaimo Regional District who is continuing their education in the animal welfare/sciences field. The first student was awarded in 2016.
